Vegan Totchos Burger

When you want Totchos and a Burger at the same time, make this!

Totchos (basically nachos made with tater tots) is something that I’ve only recently discovered. I’m not sure if that’s my fault, or if it took humans this long to figure out that cheese on top of tater tots is amazing, but either way, we can do better. But I digress, this recipe is less a recipe, and more a way to use my cheese sauce!

The cheese sauce recipe is for a full batch, so you can either make it and have a bunch of leftovers, make a bunch of Totchos Burgers, or if you’re feeling mathematical, you can adjust it so it only results in the amount of cheese you need! The choice is yours. If you don't like spicy, leave out the chipotles in adobo!

Makes 1 burger (with leftover cheese sauce)

  • 4 oz plant-based meat

  • Good handful of Tater tots

  • Sesame seed bun (or bun of choice)

Cheese Sauce

  • 1/4 cup vegan butter

  • 3 Tbsp Flour

  • 2 cups plant-milk

  • 8 oz vegan cheese shreds

  • 2 Tbsp nutritional yeast

  • 1/2 tsp garlic salt

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • 1/4 tsp cumin

  • 2 Tbsp chipotle in adobo sauce (optional)

  • 1/2 tsp umami seasoning (optional)

Additional Toppings Ideas

  • Vegan bacon

  • Onions (yellow, green, pickled)

  • Cilantro

  • Pickled Jalapeños

  • Hot Sauce


  1. Preheat your oven and cook tater tots according to package instructions.

  2. Now, let’s make the Cheese Sauce. Melt butter in a pan over medium heat.

  3. Add flour a tablespoon at a time and whisk in between each tablespoon. Once all the flour has been added whisk thoroughly, cook for 1 minute.

  4. Add plant milk 1/2 cup at a time and whisk in between each 1/2 cup.

  5. Add vegan cheese and stir until melted.

  6. Add all the seasonings and adjust to your taste.

  7. Set aside cheese and keep warm on low, stirring occasionally.

  8. Let’s make the burger. Add a little oil to a pan over medium heat.

  9. If your pan is big enough, you can cook the burger and grill your buns at the same time. Otherwise, do your buns first and set aside.

  10. Roll your meat into a ball and place on the preheated pan.

  11. Smash the ball into a patty using a spatula. You can spray your spatula with a bit of cooking spray to avoid it sticking (or use a piece of parchment paper instead)

  12. Cook patty for 3-4 minutes per side to get a nice browning CRUSTIFICATION!

  13. Once patty is cooked, add to your⁣ grilled buns, top with your tater tots and finally the cheese sauce.

  14. ENJOY!
