Vegan Sloppy Joes


Another Childhood Classic VEGANIZED! We're also gonna mash it up with my favorite fast food burger, the Western Bacon Cheeseburger!


Okay, so today I made THREE different kinds of Sloppy Joes! The first was with Manwich, which is a good choice if you are feeling lazy or pressed for time. I found it to be too sweet for my palette, so if I make it again, I'll defintely add in some savory and spicy additions.


I also made a Classic Homemade version that was super dang good! This one is not nearly as sweet as the Manwich, so if you prefer that, just add some brown sugar. But it's super customizable as well!


The third one is a mash up with a Wester Bacon Cheeseburger. So we're swapping the ketchup for BBQ sauce in the Sloppy Joe mixture, adding some onion rings, some vegan bacon and some vegan cheese sauce as well!


For said cheese sauce, I'm using my new favorite style of mixing some Sodium Citrate with some water and melting some Violife shreds in there, but if you want you can make a cheese sauce with either THIS recipe, or THIS recipe, the choice is yours!

RECIPE

  • 1 pound Plant-Based meat

  • 1/2 a yellow onion (diced)

  • 1/3 a red bell pepper (diced)

  • 1 jalapeño (seeded and diced)

  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)

  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste

  • 8 oz. tomato sauce

  • 1/4 cup ketchup

  • 1/4 - 1/3 cup water (if needed)

  • 1 Tbsp diced chipotle in adobo

  • 1 Tbsp steak sauce or vegan worcestershire sauce

  • 1 Tbsp yellow mustard

  • 1 Tbsp chili powder

  • 1 Tbsp smoked paprika

  • Hot sauce to taste (optional)

  • Salt & Pepper to taste

  • Burger Buns

For the Western Bacon Version

  • Omit the bell pepper and jalapeño

  • Swap the ketchup for BBQ sauce (add more to taste)

  • Add 4-5 slices of vegan bacon (roughly chopped)

  • Onion Rings

Cheese Sauce

  • 8 oz. vegan cheese shreds

  • 1/2 tsp Sodium Citrate

  • 4 oz. water

INSTRUCTIONS


  1. If making the Western Bacon, cook your vegan bacon until crispy and set aside.

  2. Over medium heat in a bit of oil, cook your diced onion for a few minutes. If making the Western Bacon, go to step 3. Otherwise, add in the bell pepper and jalapeño and cook until softened, about 10 minutes.

  3. Add in your plant based meat, and crumble it. Cook for 3-4 minutes without stirring, then stir and cook for another 3-4 minutes.

  4. Once your meat is well browned and cooked to your liking, add in your garlic, cook that for a minute. Then add in the tomato paste, stir and cook for a minute.

  5. Next add the 8 oz can of tomato sauce, and ketchup (or BBQ sauce if you are making it Western Bacon) stir to combine. Add the water if your sauce is to thick.

  6. Then add the diced chipotle in adobo, worcestershire, mustard, chil powder, smoked paprika and salt and pepper to taste. Cook until heated through and your sauce is at the desired consistency. Add more water if you want it thinner! But remember to taste for seasoning if you do!

  7. If you are making the Western Bacon, stir in your chopped bacon. And prepare your onion rings (I just used some frozen ones and air fried 'em).

  8. To make the Cheese Sauce (good on the Classic as well) just heat up the water in a pan and add the sodium citrate, once it's dissolved add in your vegan cheese shreds and whisk until melted and smooth! That's it!

  9. Then toast your burger buns, slop on as much of the Sloppy Joe mixture that you like. Ladle some of the cheese sauce on if you wanna, and dig in!
