Vegan Good Burger


Welcome to VEGAN GOOD BURGER home of the VEGAN GOOD BURGER!


I don't know how or why, but I made it the past 25 years without seeing the movie Good Burger. Maybe it was because I was 20 when it came out, and I thought it was just some Nickeldeon movie for kids (I mean it kinda was, but it holds up and I enjoyed it thoroughly) and I was definitely too for school back then. In any case, this came courtesy of a request via Twitter and I'm glad it did! Not only am I happy to finally know and love Good Burger the film, but this sauce it inspired is truly inspired! I literally went "Yippy Skippy" the first time I tried it (okay maybe not literally, but the sauce definitely made me glad I wasn't dead!)


Since there isn't an official Ed's Sauce recipe out there on account of it being top secret, after rewatching the scene where he's making the sauce, and based off the two ingredients he admits to using (ketchup and lemon juice) I've made some executive decisions and developed my own sauce from it!




And I gotta say, the key ingredient is the grilled onions! The sauce without them is a pretty good, but standard burger sauce. A little tangy and sweet, but once you grill some onions and blend it into the sauce, I'm telling you that it elevates it beyond a mere burger sauce, and I do think this stuff could take out an evil corporate burger chain if it were competition for sure!


You'll have some leftover grilled onions, but you can either use them on a burger, or make some Animal Style Fries with 'em, but with Ed's Sauce! That was so dang good!!

RECIPE

Makes 1 Burger with extra Sauce!

  • 1 burger bun

  • 4-5 oz. plant based burger patty (like Beyond or Impossible)

  • Tomato (sliced)

  • Iceberg lettuce

  • 1 slice vegan cheese (American if possible)

  • Dill pickle slices

Ed's Sauce

  • 3/4 cup vegan mayo

  • 1/4 cup ketchup

  • 1 Tbsp mustard (Dijon is cool too!)

  • 1 Tbsp BBQ sauce

  • 1 Tbsp dill relish

  • 2 tsp lemon juice

  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire (vegan!)

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/4 cup grilled onions

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Red Food Coloring (optional)


INSTRUCTIONS


  1. Get a large onion and dice it. Then heat up a large skillet over medium heat with some oil. Add the diced onions, sprinkle a little salt on them, and then and grill until browned and softened, about 10 - 15 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

  2. To make the Ed's Sauce add all the ingredients to a blender, and blend until smooth. Taste and adjust for seasoning, then refrigerate until needed.

  3. Next get a skillet up to medium heat. Brush some vegan butter or oil on your buns and then toast them until golden brown. Remove from pan and let them rest on a wire rack so they don't steam.

  4. Next, add your burger patty. Cook for around 3 minutes.

  5. Flip the patty, add a piece of vegan cheese, squirt a few drops of water, and then cover the pan immediately to steam and melt the cheese. Cook until the cheese has melted, about 1-2 minutes. Remove from the pan.

  6. Dress the bottom bun with Ed's Sauce, then pickles, tomato, lettuce, cheeseburger, more Ed's Sauce, top bun and ENJOY!
