Vegan Cheeseburger Sloppy Joes

Let's not only VEGANIZE the Classic American Sandwich, let's make it better by adding some Cheese and Burger Sauce! OH YEAH!


There isn't too many American dishes more iconic than the Sloppy Joe. I'm pretty sure it's a rite of passage for most kids growing up. This take has all the awesome nostalgic flavor with some added bonus ingredients to take it over the top. I'm talking about Cheese and Burger Sauce of course!


This dish is incredibly easy, and comes together fairly quickly. For the vegan beef, I used Alpha Foods Beefy Crumbles that have been seasoned and sauced liberally! Feel free to add more or less water to the mix to get the consistency you prefer.


You can serve this on a big ol' BUN or do it like I did as well and top some fries with it! Either way, you're gonna have a winner for dinner! Or lunch, or heck, even breakfast, no judgement here!

RECIPE

Makes 3-4 Sandwiches


Sloppy Joe Sauce


  • 1/4 cup ketchup

  • 1/4 cup BBQ sauce

  • 1/4 - 1/3 cup water

  • 1/2 Tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 Tbsp yellow mustard

  • 1/2 Tbsp steak sauce or vegan worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 Tbsp hot sauce

  • 1 Tbsp chili powder

  • 1 Tbsp smoked paprika


Cheese Sauce


  • 2 Tbsp vegan butter

  • 1.5 Tbsp Flour

  • 1 cups plant-milk

  • 6 oz vegan cheese shreds

  • 1 Tbsp nutritional yeast

  • 1/4 tsp turmeric

  • Salt & pepper to taste


Burger Sauce

Per Sandwich


  • 1 Tbsp vegan mayo

  • 1/2 Tbsp ketchup

  • 1/4 Tbsp sweet relish

  • Splash of white vinegar

INSTRUCTIONS


  1. Combine all the Sloppy Joe Sauce ingredients and set aside.

  2. Combine the burger sauce ingredients and set aside.

  3. In a pan with some oil or vegan butter, over medium heat, grill your onions until translucent. About 4-5 minutes.

  4. Add in the Beefy Crumbles and cook until heated through and browned, about 7-8 minutes.

  5. Add in the garlic and cook for a minute, then add in the tomato paste and stir to combine. Cook for another minute.

  6. Add in the Sloppy Joe sauce mix and stir to combine. Add more water if it's too thick, let it reduce if it's too thin. Once heated through, cover and keep warm on low.

  7. Let's make the Cheese Sauce! Melt butter in a pan over medium heat.

  8. Add flour slowly, whisk thoroughly and cook for 1 minute.

  9. Add plant milk 1/2 cup at a time and whisk in between each 1/2 cup. Bring to a simmer.

  10. Add vegan cheese and stir until melted.

  11. Add all the seasonings and adjust to your taste, keep warm on low.

  12. Toast your buns in a pan with some butter or oil.

  13. Assemble the sandwich as follow from bottom to top: burger sauce, pickles, sloppy joe, cheese, top bun!

  14. ENJOY!
