Vegan California Cheesesteak


What happens when you cross a Philly Cheesesteak with a California Burrito? This delicious VEGAN abomination!


This is, without hyperbole, one of the most delicious sandwiches I've ever eaten. If you're not familiar with a California Burrito, it's typically made with Carne Asada, Cheese, Guacamole, Sour Cream and the signature addition of French Fries. It's truly my favorite Burrito. Problem is, I'm terrible at rolling Burritos, so I thought, why not put it on a Hoagie Roll instead?


This is less of a recipe, and more just me having fun in the kitchen, and likely annoying people from Philadelphia as well as San Diego (the home of the California Burrito), but it really doesn't matter, this sandwich was so delicious that I'm sure it could convert even the biggest purist!


For the Vegan Meat, you can either use Gardein's Beefless Tips like me, or if you throw some plant based meat like Beyond or Impossible in the freezer for a bit, you can slice it up into strips and grill it. You don't want the meat totally frozen, just firm enough that it retains its shape when you cut into it.

RECIPE Makes 2 Sandwiches

  • 1/2 bag frozen fries (you might have some extra on the side)

  • 1 package Gardein Beefless Tips (or 8 oz plant based meat, freeze for 30 - 45 minutes)

  • 1/2 sweet onion (roughly chopped)

  • 3 slices Vegan Cheese (or you can use my Cheese Sauce)

  • 2 Hoagie Rolls

  • Vegan Butter

  • 1 clove garlic

  • 1 Avocado

  • Juice of 1/2 Lime

  • Garlic Salt

  • Lawry's Seasoned Salt (optional but recommended)

  • Carne Asada Marinade or Dry Rub (or Taco Seasoning)

  • Vegan Sour Cream (optional)

  • Pico de Gallo (optional)

  • Your favorite Hot Sauce (optional)


INSTRUCTIONS


  1. If you aren't air frying your fries, preheat oven and cook them according to package instructions (while making the sandwich).

  2. Make the Guacamole by combining the avocado, lime juice and garlic salt to taste. Set aside in fridge.

  3. Pull out some vegan butter from the fridge so it can get soft.

  4. Cut up your onion and plant based meat. If using Gardein, roughly chop. If using plant based ground meat, make sure it's been in the freezer for at least 30 - 45 minutes. You want it to be firm enough so it retains its shape as you slice it into strips.

  5. Crush a clove of garlic and add it to your vegan butter and combine. Then split your hoagie rolls (not all the way, about 3/4 through, you want it to have a "hinge" to keep it together) and spread your garlic butter.

  6. Grill your hoagie rolls over medium heat until golden brown. Set aside.

  7. Cook your onions in a bit of oil over medium heat until golden brown (about 8 - 10 minutes). Scooch them to one side of the pan.

  8. If you are air frying your fries, now is the time. Spray them with a bit of oil and season with Lawry's Salt (or seasoning of preference). Cook them at 380 degrees fahrenheit for about 6-8 minutes, then flip them and cook for another 6 - 8 minutes. Do this while you finish cooking your sandwich.

  9. Now add your Plant Based Meat or Gardein Tips to the grill and cook over medium heat until well browned. Season with Carne Asada seasoning or sauce. If you can't find either of those, you can use Taco Seasoning, or just add some chili powder, cumin, garlic powder etc. Experiment and get the desired flavor! Once the meat has browned, stir the onions back into the mix and combine the meat and onions.

  10. Split the meat into two sandwich shaped portions (you might have a little extra leftover, just top it on top of the extra fries for a little snack on the side if so) then top with 1 1/2 slices of vegan cheese on each. Add a little water to the pan, then cover to melt the cheese, about 2-3 minutes.

  11. Once cheese has melted, assemble your sandwiches as follows from Bottom to Top: Sour Cream, Fries, Meat and Cheese, Guacamole (spread on the top bun). You can also add some Pico De Gallo or Hot Sauce!
